Camp CARRY

Camp CARRY is an annual self-esteem summer camp offered to foster care youth through the Coalition for At-Risk Youth.

Camp CARRY in 2009 was held August 17 – 23 in collaboration with the United Peace Officers Against Crime (UPAC). Over 300 at-risk and foster care children arrived for the 7-day overnight camp in Big Bear, California. The camp activities included arts, music, dance, entertainment, horseback riding, hiking, swimming and a plethora of other outdoor activities. CARRY hosted a "Thriller" dance group, jewelry making, taekwondo classes and self-esteem building as part of the weeklong activities. CARRY Offered camp scholarships for up to 30 foster care youth, giving children the chance to mingle together so that all of the camp participants could benefit from the CAMP CARRY experience.

Dr. Pearl Grimes, Founder, was equipped with interactive sessions that allowed girls and boys to focus on the true essence of beauty – inside and out. These youth embarked on the beginning of intensive character and self-esteem building while learning about their outer skin, inner beings and what each said about their character. Dr. Grimes hosted up to four, one hour long sessions daily followed by question and answer periods that surprisingly evoked greater issues than on the surface.

From talking, hiking and dancing with these youth CARRY took the time to see and hear hundreds of youth leaving an indelible print to those who often feel invisible. Sheriff Lee Baca flew in on a helicopter to congratulate the entire camp team and CARRY provided a special treat by giving sweatshirts and backpacks to all the kids in camp.

What a fabulous time at CAMP CARRY. Take a look at some of the great photos from this year's event!

The dates for Camp CARRY in 2010 are August 16th – 22nd.
